Music From The Lost Realm

Music – the thing we listen to while we drive the car, exercise, walk around, meet with friends, live. Music makes us dance, it keeps us on our toes, it makes us cry and sing along. It enhances and sometimes manipulates our feelings until we feel part of the story being told, or actually until we really feel there, side by side with our favorite heroes.

Video games abide by this rule too – players need to know that the fate of the world depends on what they're going to do next. How we underline their actions, especially with music, has big repercussions on the feelings a game can evoke.

In November we met with Kalle Ylitalo, composer of Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm, to discuss what fans can expect from the new soundtrack. Kalle had already worked on the Oceanhorn: Monster of the Uncharted Seas original soundtrack, alongside Japanese legends such as Nobuo Uematsu and Kenji Ito. When we met, Kalle was taking a small break with Arttu Jauhiainen, flutist, one of the six talented musicians attached to the project.

"One aspect that makes composing for Oceanhorn so pleasant, is that I can concentrate on creating beautiful melodies which often have a hint of Finnish folk music in them," says Ylitalo. "This is something that comes very intuitively for me, so composing music for both the new title and the previous has felt very natural. These melodies have their roots in my early childhood when my mom used to sing a lot of Finnish folk songs to me and my brother."

His involvement in the project has roots in the past: "I've been a friend of Heikki (Repo, Cornfox & Brothers Creative Director and Co-founder) for a long time. Back then, as a teenager, he was already developing games. I don't think I helped him out with the music at that time, but I am now!"

Kalle is currently composing the Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm soundtrack in a new direction. "I feel that the first game was more of a classic adventure, and the soundtrack reflected that. Oceanhorn 2 has more diverse elements, and I've been trying to create musical traditions for each of the cultures in the game." The Pirta theme is a good example of that. There's a shakuhachi flute there, and steam-pipes sounds. "I'm really happy with those tracks because they sound like no existing music culture that I know of," adds Ylitalo. "The role of the real instruments and musicians here is to really make the score come alive. Everyone can hear the difference it makes when a talented professional interprets a melody, compared to a midi-instrument."

Arttu has worked on many different projects, but this is the first game he works on. "I haven't had a chance to play the game yet, but can't wait to try it when the music is implemented, can't be anything other than great!"

Along with Arttu (Flute, Piccolo, Alto Flute), the game's score features Lauri Sallinen (Clarinet, Bass clarinet), Sanna Niemikunnas (Oboe, English horn), Rista Tuura (Violin), Anna Grundström (Cello), and József Hárs (Horn).

"In the first game, there was this flute theme played by the protagonist's father", said Kalle when we asked about how's the main team shaping up. "It was an excellent melody, so I decided to base the main theme on it. That is the only melody in Oceanhorn 2 we have used in multiple tracks. I can't say anything more, or it would be a spoiler!"

Superbowl!

What's going on everyone?

Today for the #2019gameaday challenge dear ol' dad and I played a fun little game called Halftime Football during the Superbowl. 

We played usually only during commercials and had our quarters match up with the Superbowls quarters which was pretty entertaining. 

In the end dad ended up winning by slaughtering my generic "away team" 45 - 7!

All in all is was a fun evening and I may have to suggest us doing this every other game during the season or something.

Goodbye To Chess

Chess was important growing up. When I finally got my own room as a kid, it was the former den, filled with my father's chess trophies and books from his time on the Penn State chess team. I wasn't terribly into chess, but I read all the books in the den, mostly sports novels (ugh), chess strategy and how-to books. For a while in high school, I brought my chess set and played in science class, where the game was socially acceptable. My player's handbook stayed at home. I was a solid, thinking several moves ahead kinda kid, so the chess books were mostly aspirational. I felt like I wasn't quite smart enough to go full chess, like a wannabe wizard with an eight intelligence. Magic missile was just out of my grasp.

When I opened the store in 2004, I had a very respectable collection of chess sets, amazing really, for a 940 square foot store (amazing equals dumb for non retailers). These were all on full display, and about once a week, I would remove the pieces of each set, dust the board, and put them back on. My father was impressed when he visited. When it came to chess, I knew how to represent. This was all incredibly time consuming and eventually I lost several boxes, making selling them pretty difficult. Oh, and then there were the missing pieces. Realizing the queen is missing from a $250 Egyptian chess set will make you seek out boxed chess sets pretty fast.

As the display sets sold, their replacements tended not to get re-opened, and eventually not re-ordered as the plain white box did nothing to help move them. Chess sets sold poorly. They have always sold poorly. They sell poorly now. Stores in the region who do much better with chess, who dominate with chess? They sell poorly there too. It's a legacy item, an item that says "games" to the general public. It's a touchstone for me and my father. But chess, to be honest, is a complete waste of space.

That's not true everywhere. There are stores in the Midwest that do gangbusters with chess. But here? The serious players buy their sets online, often through chess organizations or just Amazon. In the store, I think it's enough to have a tournament size Staunton set and a roll up travel set, but beyond that there are hundreds of themed chess sets that will make you crazy as customer seek them out. Civil War? Simpsons? Harry Potter? You could stock an entire store with what's out there ... and promptly go out of business.

I used to special order sets and it was time consuming and unrewarding, unlike the work with other types of games. Help a board game customer and you may have created a regular board game customer and maybe even a board game hobbyist. Help someone with a chess set and you've sold them a chess set and you'll never seem them again.

I've watched my classic games numbers stagnate, even when I double or triple my selection. I've tried more and less and different and boxes with pictures and on display and nope, none of it works. It's dead here. I've been foolish not to drop it sooner. I would look at the corner where our "classic" games reside and fantasize about what I would put there. Frisbee golf. A coffee kiosk. Anything but chess.

With 25% Chinese tariffs, I'm extremely concerned about board games. But then there's chess. All those classic games come from China, really. I had forgotten. It's not even on my radar anymore. We just didn't re-order classic games after the holidays and nobody seemed to mind, except the occasional random customer who has clearly never been here before. We send them to the regional store that has a better selection and also doesn't make money selling them. Then that classic game space got taken up with profitable stuff. So with tariffs on the way, a better use of that space, and performance numbers that I use an example at trade shows of what you should drop, I think it's time to say goodbye to chess. Sorry dad.

28Mm Crusades Command Bases

A quick show off post today of some new command bases for my 28mm Crusades Project. These figures are from 1st Corps / Curtneys Miniatures and I picked them up from the York show a couple of years back.

I am always really slack when it comes to Command Stands and end up with armies hundreds of figures strong with no commanders, so to get four (The other one will be in the Kingdom of Jerusalem force review later in the week) done at this stage of the Army build is pretty remarkable.

Base number one is based on my Red Knights unit (a later Hospitaller unit) and consists of a musician and standard bearer, flags are from Flags of War.

Second base is for my St Lazarus Knights, those of you who are familiar with the blog may notice that my choice of command stands is based around left over decals from previous units, not that I'm tight or anything 😁

The commander figures are basically the same but with different head and weapon options, this one has a bishop type head and a made.

So there we have three command bases ready for our next Crusades game whenever that will be, Kingdom of Jerusalem and of Project shots coming next.
